. . . . About Us . . . .

Since 1946....

.... the Yellowstone Conservation District has been the regional leader in local common sense conservation practices throughout the 2,649 square mile watershed. The Yellowstone Conservation District is one of 58 conservation districts in the state of Montana including 70 municipalities within those district boundaries.

Yellowstone Conservation District

Conservation districts are political subdivisions with broad power and authority to carry out programs that conserve soil and water, protect streams and rivers, and improve other natural resources. Funding for operations comes from a small tax levied on real property within the boundaries of the conservation district and from grants for operations and special projects. Conservation districts are autonomous local governmental entities.

Conservation districts carry out most work in cooperation with many partners. The main partners include the following, but there are many others:

  • The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
  • The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Conservation District Bureau
  • The Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks by law is a team member on all 310 applications. They provide advice on stream-bed and land preservation act (310 permits).

Our Team

  •  Are locally elected volunteers whose role is to oversee and positively affect natural resource management.
  •  Provide a conduit for accessing federal dollars and technical assistance to make state dollars go farther.
  •  Are the voice for private lands that benefit our environment and our economy.
  •  Educate our state’s youth in understanding plant, animal, soil, and water resources and their relationships to each other and our communities.
